Millions of Americans facing a money squeeze are postponing doctor visits or not buying prescription drugs, which is possibly endangering their health.
What’s more, a significant portion of those who are gambling with their well-being in this way are also part of the fastest-growing segment of the country’s population, according to the US Census Bureau: the elderly.
Older Americans, already facing problems because the value of their investments has declined, are finding themselves forced to cut back on health-care costs, according to a new economic study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
“The study finds that 1 in 5 adults over 50 has adopted such involuntary saving behavior, and that such behavior is more prevalent among those in poor health,” according to the study.
“People just don’t have the money to pay their medical bills,” says Sudipto Banerjee, the author of the study.
He adds that the problem is part of a larger one. Many Americans, he notes, don’t have significant cash reserves. Therefore, any extraordinary expense can put them in a hole.
And it’s not just older Americans who are forced to gamble with their health, the EBRI said.
The report says that single women and African-Americans were among those included in the high-risk group.
In addition, those in poor health are much more likely than those in excellent health to practice this form of “involuntary saving,” EBRI says.
These “involuntary savings” are arrived at in a number of ways: 21 percent of those cutting back on medical care made prescription-drug changes, 19 percent skipped a doctor’s appointment, and 27 percent weren’t able to pay all their monthly bills, according to the survey.
Banerjee noted about half of the people who were surveyed are covered by Medicare, for which Americans are eligible at age 65.
It remains to be seen if the numbers of those economizing on health care will go down or up under Obamacare, which is slated to begin this year.
“A big part of the problem is that many people just don’t have enough saved for retirement,” Banerjee says.
The EBRI study is based on analysis from the 2009 Internet Survey of the Health and Retirement Study. The survey reported the responses of 4,413 people to an array of questions that concerned doctor visits, costs of prescriptions and payment of monthly bills.

While doing this photo, a teenage girl accompanied by two boys yelled: Hey, why do you shoot at night if you do not see anything? ". After a while I met with them and, after telling that when you talk to a stranger you have to treat you with respect, I showed the pictures taken and how is it possible to "shoot at night."
For them.
